Best Friends by Sheri The Original Calming Donut Bed (23" Small) Review

The plush donut bed that started a thousand imitations — a raised shag-fur rim your dog can burrow into, curl against, and disappear inside.

The verdict

The Original Calming Donut is the rare viral pet product that holds up to scrutiny. The raised rim gives curl-up sleepers something to press their back against, the faux shag fur traps body heat without a heating element, and the whole 23-inch bed goes straight into the washing machine. For dachshunds and other burrow-happy breeds it's practically purpose-built. It won't suit hot-natured dogs or heavy chewers, but for most small dogs this is the bed they pick when given a choice.

What we like

  • +Raised donut rim supports curl-up sleepers and gives anxious dogs something to nestle against
  • +Long faux shag fur is self-warming — it traps body heat the way a burrowed blanket does
  • +The entire 23" bed is machine washable and dryer safe (small sizes wash whole, no disassembly)
  • +Water-resistant, non-slip bottom keeps it planted on hard floors
  • +The 23" size fits a 10–12 lb mini dachshund with room to fully stretch or fully curl
  • +Light enough to move room to room — dogs that follow you around appreciate this

What to know

  • Loose polyester fill flattens over months of nightly use — fluff it like a pillow to revive the loft
  • Warm by design; heat-seeking dogs love it, but heavy-coated or hot-natured dogs may sleep beside it in summer
  • No orthopedic support — the fill cushions but doesn't hold shape like memory foam
  • The shag fur sheds a little on the first wash and collects debris between washes

Full review

Dogs sleep the way their instincts tell them to, and for most small breeds that means curled up, back against something, nose tucked under a tail. The Calming Donut is one of the few beds actually engineered around that posture. The raised rim wraps the whole circumference, so however your dog rotates through the night there's always a bolster at their back and a soft ledge for their chin. The long faux shag fur does the other half of the work: it traps body heat the way a nest of blankets does, which is why heat-seeking breeds — dachshunds most of all — tend to claim this bed within a day of it arriving.

Sizing is where most buyers go wrong, so here's the practical guidance: the 23-inch Small is right for dogs up to roughly 25 pounds, and it's a genuinely luxurious fit for a 10–12 pound mini dachshund — enough room to curl in the middle or sprawl with paws up on the rim. Bigger dogs should size up at least one step from what the chart suggests, because a dog that can't fit fully inside the donut loses the whole point of the design. One more fit note for the long-and-low crowd: the rim compresses when stepped on, so the effective entry height is close to zero. There's no hop required, which matters for breeds where vets commonly recommend minimizing jumping.

The honest caveats: this is a comfort bed, not an orthopedic one. The loose fill compresses under a nightly sleeper and needs an occasional fluff-and-shake to restore its loft, and senior dogs with joint trouble will get more support from the PetFusion below. It also runs warm by design — a feature from October to April, less so in a hot house in July. But the washability is superb (the whole 23-inch bed goes in the machine, no zippers or inserts to fight with), the non-slip base actually grips, and the price is very reasonable for how much use it gets. As an everyday bed for a small curl-up sleeper, it's the first thing we'd buy.

Best for: Small dogs that sleep curled in a ball and burrow under blankets — the donut shape and warm shag fur are exactly what that sleep style wants.
