This is the house specialty — the site is run under the supervision of a miniature dachshund. Long, low dogs have two gear rules the average shopping list ignores: protect the back (steps and ramps instead of couch launches, a harness instead of a collar) and respect the burrow (these dogs sleep under things, by design). Everything below is chosen against those two rules.

A collar is fine for holding ID tags, but the leash should clip to a harness. Dachshunds combine a long spine with a strong prey drive — a squirrel-lunge against a collar concentrates all that force on the neck. A chest harness spreads it across the sternum.
No product can prevent IVDD — it's largely genetic in dachshunds — but vets widely recommend minimizing repeated jump impacts, and furniture steps are the practical way to do that. Think of them as reducing a known risk factor, not eliminating a disease.
