Start with why a harness at all: for small and long-backed dogs, vets and trainers commonly recommend clipping the leash to a harness rather than a collar, because a sudden lunge against a collar concentrates all that force on a small neck. The Front Range is built around exactly that idea. The load lands on a foam-padded chest panel and gets spread across the sternum and ribcage, so even when a squirrel materializes mid-walk, the jolt is absorbed where the dog is strongest.
Fit is where the Front Range separates itself from the sea of cheaper padded harnesses. Dachshunds are the classic hard-to-fit case — a deep keel of a chest, a narrow waist, and short legs that put strap edges close to the armpits — and the four adjustment points handle that geometry better than almost anything else we've evaluated. For a 10–12 lb mini dachshund, XS is the usual call (measure the widest part of the chest; roughly 17–22 inches lands in XS), while bigger dogs simply move up the six-size run. The over-the-head entry is the one ergonomic quibble: head-shy dogs may grumble for the first week, and a treat held through the neck opening speeds up the truce.
The details justify the price. The back-mounted aluminum V-ring is where the leash lives day to day; the reinforced loop at the chest gives you a front-clip option that gently redirects a mild puller without any 'no-pull' tightening mechanics. There's an ID pocket in the chest panel so tags stop jingling, reflective trim for gray-dawn walks, and stitching that shrugs off years of daily buckling. If you walk your dog once in a while, a budget harness is fine. If the harness goes on every single day, the Front Range is the buy-it-once answer.
