Chuckit! Ultra Ball (Small, 2-pack) Review
The fetch ball, perfected: high-bounce rubber that floats, rinses clean, and actually fits a small dog's mouth.

The verdict
If your dog plays fetch, the Ultra Ball is the ball. It out-bounces a tennis ball, floats for water retrieves, and โ crucially for small dogs โ the rubber doesn't carry the abrasive felt that wears down tooth enamel the way tennis balls do over years of play. The Small size (2 inches) is scaled for dogs under 20 lb, launches from the matching Small Chuckit! launcher, and glows high-visibility orange and blue in grass. At about $8 for two, it's the cheapest item on this list and might be the most used. The only real warnings are sizing ones: always match ball size to dog size.
Typical price: ~$8 (typical street price โ current price shown on Amazon)
Buy on AmazonWhat we like
- +High-bounce natural rubber core makes erratic hops that flat-out beat a tennis ball for chase appeal
- +No abrasive tennis-ball felt โ kinder to tooth enamel over thousands of fetches
- +Floats, so lake and pool retrieves don't end in a lost ball
- +Rinses or scrubs clean instead of turning into a soggy germ sponge
- +2-inch Small is properly scaled for sub-20-lb mouths and fits the Small Chuckit! launcher
- +Two balls for about $8 โ backup included
What to know
- โIt's a fetch ball, not a chew toy โ a dog left to gnaw one at leisure can eventually compromise the rubber
- โBall-obsessed dogs don't know when to quit; you are the off switch on hot days, especially for flat-ish faces and long-backed breeds
- โBright colors fade with heavy outdoor use
Full review
Fetch equipment is one of those categories where the upgrade costs almost nothing and improves every single session. The Ultra Ball is a solid-feeling, high-bounce rubber ball that does three things a tennis ball can't: it bounces higher and weirder (which dogs find electrifying), it floats high in the water, and it doesn't wrap your dog's favorite object in abrasive felt. That last one is the sleeper benefit โ veterinary dentists have long pointed out that years of gnawing sandy tennis-ball felt acts like fine sandpaper on enamel. Rubber isn't a dental treat, but it's not actively filing the teeth down either.
Sizing is where small-dog owners need to pay attention, in both directions. The 2-inch Small is right for a 10โ20 lb dog โ a mini dachshund can pick it up, carry it, and drop it on your foot with authority, none of which works with the standard 2.5-inch Medium. But the reverse matters more: never throw a Small ball for a big dog. A ball that fits entirely inside a mouth can lodge in a throat, and it's the sizing error behind most ball-related emergencies. Match the ball to the dog, and if two different-sized dogs share a household fetch session, throw only the larger dog's ball.
The pair-for-$8 pricing solves fetch's oldest logistics problem: the ball that went under the fence, into the pond, or into a bush with poison oak. Keep one in the leash bag and one at home and you're never negotiating with a disappointed dachshund. One behavioral note for long-backed breeds like Max's: fetch on flat grass is great exercise, but skip the high vertical throws that trigger acrobatic leaps and hard twisting landings โ dachshund spines don't need the airtime. Low line drives, happy dog, intact ball budget.
Best for: Every fetch-playing small dog, and every owner tired of picking up cold, slobber-soaked tennis balls with bare hands.
