KONG Puppy Toy (Small) Review

Teething is a problem you solve with materials science or you solve with your furniture. Puppies between roughly three and six months need to chew — the urge is physiological, not behavioral — and the KONG Puppy exists to be the correct answer at the correct hardness. The rubber is noticeably softer than the adult Classic, with enough give for baby teeth to sink in satisfyingly without the fracture risk harder chews pose to immature mouths. The shape is the familiar hollow snowman, which means the real feature is inside: stuff it, freeze it, and hand a sore-gummed puppy twenty minutes of cold, soothing, fully-occupied relief.

The frozen-stuffing ritual is worth building early, because it quietly trains the most valuable behavior a dog can have: settling alone with a project. A puppy who learns at ten weeks that the blue snowman means lie down and work gets easier crate sessions, calmer alone-time, and a default activity that isn't barking at the window. Keep the loadout puppy-appropriate — soaked kibble, plain yogurt, a smear of xylitol-free peanut butter — and treat the calories as part of dinner, not extra. Two in rotation (one frozen, one in the dishwasher) is the veteran move.

Be clear-eyed about the lifecycle. Soft rubber is the point, and soft rubber is also the limitation: a large-breed puppy with an early power-chewer streak can start gouging pieces off, which is the signal to size up in toughness ahead of schedule. For most puppies the toy simply serves its four-or-five-month tour, collects its scuff marks, and hands the ritual off to the red Classic once the adult jaw arrives. That's not poor durability — that's a stage-specific tool finishing its stage. Few $11 purchases in the puppy aisle deliver as much peace per dollar.
