The KONG Classic has been around since the 1970s and the design hasn't needed to change: a hollow, snowman-shaped piece of natural rubber that bounces unpredictably, stands up to real chewing, and — the important part — holds food. A toy that's fun empty becomes indispensable stuffed. Smear peanut butter inside, pack in some kibble, freeze it overnight, and you've bought yourself a solid stretch of quiet from a dog who would otherwise be supervising your every move.
Sizing matters more than most owners realize, and it matters double for small breeds. The Small KONG is scaled for a 5–20 lb dog: a 10–12 lb dachshund can actually get its tongue into the cavity and its jaws around the rubber, which is the whole point. Give that same dog a Medium and the opening is too big to hold a frozen stuffing well; give a Lab the Small and it's a swallowing hazard. Match the size chart to your dog's weight, and when in doubt between two sizes, go up — a too-big KONG is boring, a too-small one is dangerous.
The honest caveats are minor. New KONGs smell like rubber for a few days (leave it out to air, or run it through the dishwasher). Dogs who methodically destroy toys can eventually work chunks off a Classic — those dogs should be on the black Extreme version, which uses a harder compound. And the toy is only as good as your stuffing game: too loose and the payoff is instant, too tight and a beginner dog gives up. Start easy, graduate to frozen, and this $11 piece of rubber will quietly become the hardest-working item in your dog's toy bin.
