Zuke's Mini Naturals Training Treats (Chicken, 1 lb) Review

Here's the math that makes training treats a genuinely important purchase for small-dog owners. A 10–12 lb dog needs somewhere in the neighborhood of 350–450 calories a day, and the standard veterinary guidance is that treats should stay under about 10% of that — call it 40 calories of discretionary budget. One medium supermarket biscuit can blow the whole allowance. Zuke's Mini Naturals run about 3 calories apiece, which means a proper training session — thirty, forty, fifty reinforced reps — fits inside the budget with room left over. For recall training, loose-leash work, or anything else that lives on repetition, that's not a nice-to-have. It's the difference between training your dog and rationing your dog.

The mechanics are as good as the math. The treats are soft, so a dog swallows one in about a second and looks back up at you — no crunching intermission where your training loop goes slack. They're small enough that even a mini dachshund can take fifty in a session without filling up, and they're aromatic enough (in a pleasantly meaty rather than room-clearing way) to hold attention in a distracting park. Chicken leads the ingredient list, there's no corn, wheat, or soy, and they're made in the USA. Bigger dogs don't need anything different, by the way — trainers use these same pea-sized treats on Labradors, because reward speed matters more than reward size. This is one product where large-dog owners should size down to small-dog gear, not the other way around.

The complaints are the standard soft-treat complaints. Once the pouch is open the clock starts: left loosely sealed for a few weeks, the treats dry firm and lose some of their appeal, so squeeze the air out and seal it properly, or decant half into an airtight container. The bottom of the bag accumulates crumbly dust — sprinkle it over dinner and nothing is wasted. And remember what these are for: they're rewards, not occupiers, so they do nothing for a dog who needs twenty minutes of chewing (see the bully sticks below for that job). As a training tool, though, we haven't found anything at this price that does the job better.
