The verdict
The Bucket Booster solves the small-dog car problem from both ends: elevation lets a short dog see out the window (which calms many dogs and helps some with motion sickness), and the included tethers clip to a harness so the dog can't wander the cabin, climb into your lap, or become a projectile in a hard stop. The seat belts down securely, the plush cover comes off for washing, and the walls of the bucket give a nervous rider something to lean against. Always tether to a harness — never a collar — and it's the best everyday car upgrade for a small dog.

The way most small dogs ride in cars — loose on a seat or a lap — fails on every axis at once: the dog is a distraction, an unrestrained object in a panic stop, and often anxious or queasy because they're below window height with no horizon to watch. A booster seat is the fix for all three, and the Bucket Booster is our favorite implementation. The bucket belts to the seat with the car's own belt, the dog clips to the bucket by the included tethers, and the elevation puts a short dog's eyes at window level. It's remarkable how many restless riders settle once they can actually see where the car is going.
The details are dog-owner practical. There are two tether points, so wiggly dogs get restrained at two angles, and the tethers adjust short enough that the dog can sit and lie down but can't reach the window sills or launch over the console. The bucket's firm foam walls hold their shape and give a leaning dog support through corners — think of it as a bolster bed that happens to be belted into your back seat, which is also exactly how it functions at the hotel when you arrive. The plush cover zips off for the wash after muddy-trailhead season. The Small carries dogs up to about 20 pounds, generous for a mini dachshund; between sizes, go up so the dog can curl comfortably.
Two safety notes we won't soft-pedal. First, tether to a well-fitted harness, never a collar — in a sudden stop, a collar tether puts all that force on the neck, which defeats the purpose of restraining the dog at all. Second, be honest about what a booster is: a massive upgrade over riding loose, and genuine containment in a hard stop, but not a crash-tested safety device in the way a few premium (and much more expensive) crash-rated seats and crates are. If your dog logs highway miles daily, it's worth researching that category. For the everyday errand-and-adventure dog, though, the Bucket Booster is the sweet spot of safety, calm, and comfort — put it in the back seat, clip the harness, and enjoy the strange new experience of a quiet drive.
